PHP provides near-full-day treatment intensity for clients who still need close clinical oversight. Partial hospitalization typically involves 6+ hours of programming per day, 5–6 days per week. Clients attend during the day and return home or to sober living each evening. PHP serves as a step-down from inpatient or residential—bridging the gap between 24/7 care and the independence of outpatient life.
IOP offers flexibility with robust support for clients balancing outside obligations. Intensive outpatient typically involves 3–5 sessions per week, approximately 3 hours per session. Clients can maintain work, school, or family responsibilities while receiving structured clinical care. IOP is the workhorse of addiction treatment—flexible enough for real life, intensive enough to drive change.
Transitions between PHP and IOP should be based on measurable progress, not arbitrary timelines. Some clients need 2 weeks of PHP before stepping down to IOP; others need 6 weeks. Our treatment teams assess readiness based on engagement, symptom stability, and aftercare planning. We individualize every transition.
PHP is ideal when you need more than IOP but do not need 24/7 care. IOP is ideal when you have stable housing and support but need more than weekly outpatient. The right choice depends on your current stability, support systems, and obligations. Our admissions team can assess and recommend.
Both PHP and IOP are typically covered by insurance when medically necessary. We verify benefits before admission and assist with authorization. Call our admissions line to learn more about PHP and IOP options and which might fit your situation.
