Seniors Treatment Program at RVK Treatment

How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care

Older adults face unique challenges in addiction—medication interactions, comorbidities, and often isolation. At RVK Treatment, our Seniors Treatment Program offers age-aware care with medication safety, comorbidity coordination, and family education.

We address the specific needs of older adults: medication review for interactions with substances, coordination with primary care and specialists, and attention to cognitive and physical health. We understand that addiction in later life may look different than in younger adults.

Family education helps caregivers understand senior addiction and support recovery. We address enabling behaviors, medication safety, and creating supportive home environments. We connect families with resources for caregiver support.

Recovery is possible at any age. Call our admissions line to learn more about our Seniors Treatment Program. We are here to support older adults and their families.

Substance use disorders among older adults are significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated, often because the signs of addiction in seniors—confusion, falls, memory issues, mood changes—overlap with common aging-related conditions and are dismissed by family members and healthcare providers alike. At RVK Treatment, our clinical team is trained to distinguish between substance-related symptoms and age-related decline, conducting thorough assessments that examine medication use patterns, alcohol consumption history, and the psychosocial factors that contribute to late-life addiction. Many older adults develop substance use disorders later in life following retirement, bereavement, chronic pain diagnosis, or the onset of social isolation. Others have lived with addiction for decades but are now facing escalating health consequences that make continued use life-threatening.

Day-to-day programming in our Seniors Treatment Program is adapted to the physical, cognitive, and social needs of older adults. We offer a gentler pace of therapeutic programming that respects the energy levels and physical limitations common in this population while maintaining clinical rigor. Morning sessions include wellness activities such as gentle movement, chair yoga, or guided meditation, followed by process groups facilitated at a pace that allows full participation. Individual therapy sessions address the specific psychological themes of aging and addiction—grief and loss, existential concerns, diminished independence, retirement identity, and the fear of burdening family members. Afternoon programming includes psychoeducation on medication safety, nutrition for aging bodies in recovery, and cognitive stimulation activities that support brain health alongside sobriety.

Medical complexity is a hallmark of treating older adults with substance use disorders. Many seniors in our program are managing multiple chronic conditions—heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, COPD, hypertension—while also taking numerous prescription medications that may interact dangerously with alcohol or illicit substances. Our medical team conducts comprehensive medication reconciliation at intake, working with each client's primary care physician, specialists, and pharmacy to identify risky interactions, unnecessary prescriptions, and opportunities to optimize the medication regimen. We provide medically supervised detoxification with heightened monitoring for age-related complications such as cardiac events, delirium, and seizures. Our nursing staff is trained in geriatric care and maintains vigilant attention to the unique medical vulnerabilities of older adults throughout treatment.

Family involvement in senior treatment requires sensitivity to the complex family dynamics that often surround aging and addiction. Adult children may find themselves in the unfamiliar role of confronting a parent about substance use, while spouses may have spent years enabling or accommodating their partner's addiction. Our family program provides education about senior-specific addiction patterns, guidance on having compassionate conversations about substance use, and therapy focused on role reversal, boundary setting, and caregiver burnout. We address the guilt that family members often feel when seeking treatment for an aging loved one and help families understand that treatment is an act of love and respect. For seniors without family involvement, we help build support networks through peer connections, community senior services, and faith-based organizations.

Clinical specializations within our Seniors Treatment Program include expertise in prescription medication misuse—particularly benzodiazepines, opioid pain medications, and sleep aids—which is the fastest-growing category of substance use among older adults. We address the unique relationship seniors have with their prescribers and the medical system, helping clients develop assertive communication skills for discussing pain management alternatives and medication concerns with their doctors. Our team also specializes in the intersection of cognitive decline and substance use, providing neuropsychological screening to differentiate between substance-induced cognitive impairment and early-stage dementia. For clients with mild cognitive impairment, we adapt therapeutic approaches to accommodate memory and processing challenges while still delivering meaningful clinical intervention.

Insurance coverage for senior addiction treatment is available through Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid, supplemental insurance policies, and some commercial plans. Our admissions team has specialized expertise in navigating Medicare coverage for behavioral health services, including understanding the distinction between Medicare Part A inpatient benefits and Part B outpatient services. We verify coverage, obtain necessary authorizations, and appeal denials when appropriate. For seniors facing financial barriers, we connect them with state-funded programs, Area Agency on Aging resources, and nonprofit organizations that support older adults in accessing healthcare. Our outcomes data for seniors who complete treatment demonstrate significant improvements in overall health status, medication compliance, cognitive functioning, social engagement, and quality of life—confirming that recovery is not only possible at any age but that it can profoundly improve the remaining years of a person's life.
