Teen Treatment Program at RVK Treatment

How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care

Adolescent addiction requires treatment designed for teens. At RVK Treatment, our Teen Treatment Program offers age-tailored care, school support, and family involvement. We understand the unique pressures of adolescence—peer influence, identity formation, academic stress—and adapt our approach accordingly.

Our teen program includes individual therapy, peer groups, family therapy, and academic support. We do not simply replicate adult programming; we create an environment where teens can engage safely. Our clinicians are trained in adolescent development and substance use.

School continuity is a priority. We coordinate with schools to support academic progress during treatment. Our education liaisons work with school counselors to minimize disruption. We understand that falling behind academically can undermine motivation.

Family involvement is essential. Parents participate in family therapy and family education. We help families understand teen addiction, set boundaries, and create a home environment that supports recovery. Research shows that family engagement significantly improves outcomes.

Teen treatment is available at select RVK campuses. Call our admissions line to learn more and whether our program fits your teen's needs.

Teens who struggle with substance use often present with a complex web of co-occurring challenges including anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, and self-harm behaviors. Our adolescent clinical team conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to identify these co-occurring conditions and develop integrated treatment plans that address the full scope of each teen's needs. We use evidence-based modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy skills training, and motivational interviewing adapted specifically for adolescent populations. Our approach recognizes that teen brains are still developing, and we design interventions that account for the neurological realities of adolescent decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation.

The daily structure of our Teen Treatment Program balances clinical intensity with the developmental needs of adolescents. Mornings typically include academic instruction facilitated by certified teachers, followed by individual therapy sessions and therapeutic group activities in the afternoon. Experiential therapies such as art therapy, music therapy, adventure-based counseling, and mindfulness practice are woven throughout the week to engage teens who may resist traditional talk therapy. Physical activity and recreation are built into every day because exercise supports both mental health and neurological recovery from substance use. Evening programming includes peer support groups, journaling, and structured free time that helps teens practice healthy social skills in a supervised environment.

Peer influence is one of the most powerful forces in adolescent life, and our program harnesses this constructively through carefully facilitated peer groups and a therapeutic community model. Teens learn from one another's experiences, practice accountability, and develop healthy relational skills in a setting where vulnerability is normalized rather than exploited. Our group facilitators are skilled at managing adolescent group dynamics—including power imbalances, cliques, and avoidance behaviors—to ensure that every teen feels safe and included. We also address digital literacy and social media use, helping teens develop healthier relationships with technology that often plays a significant role in their substance use patterns and mental health challenges.

Family programming in our teen track is intensive and begins from the first week of treatment. Parents and guardians attend weekly family therapy sessions, multi-family groups, and psychoeducation workshops designed to help them understand the science of adolescent addiction, recognize enabling patterns, and develop communication strategies that support recovery without damaging the parent-teen relationship. We address the grief, anger, and fear that parents experience when their child struggles with substance use, providing a supportive space where families can heal alongside their teen. Sibling involvement is offered when clinically appropriate, and we provide referrals for individual therapy for family members who need additional support.

Insurance navigation for teen treatment can be particularly complex, as coverage for adolescent behavioral health services varies significantly across plans and states. Our admissions team specializes in verifying adolescent-specific benefits, obtaining prior authorizations, and advocating for medically necessary levels of care. We work with commercial insurers, Medicaid managed care organizations, and state-funded programs to maximize coverage. For families facing financial barriers, we explore scholarship funds, sliding scale options, and community resources. We believe that no teen should be denied access to life-saving treatment due to insurance limitations, and our team works tirelessly to remove financial obstacles that stand between adolescents and the care they need.

Outcomes from our Teen Treatment Program consistently demonstrate significant reductions in substance use, improvements in mental health symptom severity, and gains in academic engagement and family cohesion. We measure progress using validated adolescent assessment instruments at intake, throughout treatment, and at discharge. Our aftercare planning connects teens with outpatient therapists, school-based counselors, peer recovery support, and sober social activities in their home communities. We maintain contact with families for twelve months post-discharge to support the transition and intervene early if challenges arise. Our alumni network includes teen-specific programming that helps young people in recovery stay connected and supported through the critical months following treatment.
