How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care
Young adults (ages 18–25) face unique challenges in recovery—identity formation, transition to independence, academic and career decisions. At RVK Treatment, our Young Adult Treatment program provides identity-stage support with peer-informed groups, life skills, and academic support.
Our young adult program creates a community of peers who share similar life stage challenges. Group therapy addresses identity, relationships, and the transition to adulthood. We help young adults build life skills—financial literacy, decision-making, healthy relationships—that support long-term recovery.
Academic support is available for college students. We coordinate with universities for medical withdrawal or leave when needed, and support transition back to school. We understand that education is a priority for many young adults.
Family involvement is encouraged. Many young adults still need family support during recovery. We offer family therapy and help families navigate the balance between support and enabling. Call our admissions line to learn more.
Young adults represent one of the fastest-growing demographics in substance use treatment, driven in part by rising rates of opioid misuse, stimulant use, and co-occurring mental health conditions among this age group. Many young adults first encountered substances during their teenage years, but the consequences escalate as they take on adult responsibilities without the coping mechanisms or support systems to manage them. Our clinical team understands that young adults are navigating critical developmental milestones—establishing careers, forming romantic partnerships, developing financial independence—and that substance use disrupts each of these trajectories. Treatment at RVK is designed to not just address the addiction but to help young adults get back on track developmentally.
The daily programming in our Young Adult Treatment track reflects the unique energy, interests, and learning styles of this population. Morning sessions focus on process groups and individual therapy, while afternoons incorporate experiential modalities such as outdoor adventure therapy, creative arts workshops, fitness programming, and vocational exploration activities. We integrate technology literacy and digital wellness discussions, recognizing that social media and digital culture play significant roles in young adult substance use patterns and recovery. Evening programming includes peer-led recovery meetings, mindfulness practice, and structured social activities that help young adults practice sober socializing. Weekend programming offers community service opportunities and recreational outings that build confidence and connection.
Career and vocational development is a cornerstone of our young adult programming. Many clients in this age group have interrupted their education or career trajectory due to substance use, and rebuilding professional identity is essential for sustained recovery. Our vocational counselors provide resume workshops, interview preparation, career aptitude assessments, and connections to local employers who support individuals in recovery. For college-bound young adults, we assist with readmission applications, financial aid reinstatement, and academic accommodations. We help clients develop realistic goal-setting skills and create actionable plans for education and employment that align with their recovery timeline and personal aspirations.
Co-occurring mental health conditions are prevalent among young adults in treatment, with anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and attention deficit disorders being especially common. Our psychiatric team provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and medication management tailored to the young adult population, accounting for factors such as hormonal changes, lifestyle instability, and the heightened sensitivity of the developing brain to psychotropic medications. Therapy modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and EMDR for trauma processing. We also address the unique relationship young adults have with substances as coping mechanisms for social anxiety, academic pressure, and the overwhelming uncertainty of early adulthood.
Insurance and financial concerns are often top-of-mind for young adults and their families. Many young adults are still covered under a parent's insurance plan until age 26, while others may have employer-sponsored coverage or qualify for Medicaid. Our admissions team navigates these varied coverage scenarios with expertise, verifying benefits, securing prior authorizations, and appealing denials when necessary. We also connect young adults with state-funded treatment programs, scholarship opportunities, and financing options to ensure that cost does not become a barrier to recovery. Financial literacy workshops within our program help young adults develop budgeting skills and understand the long-term economic impact of sustained recovery versus continued substance use.
Outcomes for young adults who complete our program are encouraging. Clients consistently report significant reductions in substance use, improvements in mental health symptoms, and progress toward educational and vocational goals. We track outcomes using validated instruments at intake, discharge, and at three, six, and twelve-month follow-up intervals. Our aftercare program connects young adults with sober living environments, outpatient therapy, peer recovery coaches, and alumni support groups specifically designed for their age group. We recognize that the transition from structured treatment back to independent living is particularly challenging for young adults, and our continuing care model provides graduated support that empowers clients to build sustainable recovery in the real world.
