How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care
Prescription drug misuse—including opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and sedatives—can lead to dependence and addiction. At RVK Treatment, we provide specialized care for prescription drug addiction, including safe detox protocols, medication review, and integrated therapy. Our physicians understand the nuances of prescription medications and tailor treatment accordingly.
Opioid prescription misuse often requires the same care as heroin addiction—medically supervised detox, MAT, and behavioral therapy. Benzodiazepine prescription dependence requires gradual taper. Stimulant prescription misuse (e.g., Adderall) may require different approaches. We assess each client individually.
We coordinate with prescribing physicians when appropriate, with client consent. Some clients have legitimate medical needs that overlap with addiction; we work to address both. Our goal is not to stigmatize prescription use but to support safe, appropriate use when possible and recovery when addiction has developed.
Family education helps loved ones understand prescription drug addiction and support recovery. We offer family therapy and connect families with resources for safe medication storage and disposal when relevant.

Prescription drug addiction often develops insidiously. A patient may begin taking an opioid for legitimate pain, a benzodiazepine for panic attacks, or a stimulant for ADHD, and over weeks or months of regular use, tolerance and dependence develop. The transition from therapeutic use to addiction is rarely a deliberate choice—it is a neurobiological process. Physical effects vary by drug class: opioid misuse carries overdose and respiratory depression risk; benzodiazepine misuse increases seizure vulnerability upon cessation; stimulant misuse can cause cardiac complications, insomnia, and psychotic symptoms. At RVK Treatment, our medical team is experienced in recognizing and treating the full spectrum of prescription drug dependence regardless of how it originated.
Withdrawal management for prescription drugs is highly substance-specific. Opioid prescription withdrawal follows opioid detox protocols, including potential MAT induction. Benzodiazepine withdrawal requires a carefully managed taper that may extend weeks or longer. Stimulant withdrawal, while not physically dangerous, produces significant fatigue, depression, and cognitive impairment. Sedative-hypnotic withdrawal can mirror benzodiazepine withdrawal in severity. Our clinical team creates individualized detox plans based on the specific medication, dosage, duration of use, and any concurrent prescriptions. We collaborate with the client's prescribing physicians when consent is provided to ensure safe transitions and avoid dangerous gaps in medically necessary treatment for co-occurring conditions.
Daily programming for prescription drug addiction at RVK addresses the psychological complexity that surrounds medication dependence. Many clients struggle with shame because their addiction began with a legitimate prescription from a trusted doctor. Group therapy provides a space where this shame can be explored and released in the company of peers with similar experiences. Individual therapy addresses the underlying conditions—chronic pain, anxiety, attention deficits—that led to the original prescription, and works with the client to develop alternative management strategies. Psychoeducation groups cover safe medication practices, the neuroscience of tolerance and dependence, and how to communicate effectively with healthcare providers about addiction history when seeking future medical care.
Dual diagnosis is inherent to prescription drug treatment because the very conditions for which medications were prescribed often persist alongside the addiction. Chronic pain patients need a comprehensive pain management plan that does not rely on opioids. Anxiety disorder patients need evidence-based alternatives to benzodiazepines. ADHD patients may need non-stimulant medication options or behavioral strategies. Our psychiatric and medical teams work together to develop integrated care plans that treat the whole person. We also screen for secondary mental health conditions—depression, trauma, disordered eating—that may have developed during the course of prescription misuse and address them concurrently.
Family dynamics play an important role in prescription drug recovery. Loved ones may have unknowingly facilitated access to medications, dismissed early warning signs because the drugs were prescribed, or struggled to distinguish between legitimate medical use and addictive behavior. Our family therapy program addresses these dynamics with compassion and clarity. We educate families about how prescription addiction develops, how to support recovery without policing medication use, and how to create a home environment that reduces relapse risk. We also provide guidance on securing medications in the home and proper disposal of unused prescriptions to protect all household members.
The recovery outlook for prescription drug addiction is favorable when treatment addresses both the addiction and the underlying condition that led to the prescription. At RVK Treatment, we ensure every client leaves with a comprehensive aftercare plan that includes non-addictive medication management when needed, outpatient therapy, and connections to peer support networks. Our alumni program provides ongoing check-ins and rapid re-engagement support. Clients who complete our program consistently report improved quality of life, restored relationships, and effective management of the conditions that once drove their prescription use. Recovery is not about enduring untreated pain or anxiety—it is about finding safer, sustainable paths to wellness.
