How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care
Adolescent addiction treatment requires a different approach than adult care. At RVK Treatment, our teen programs account for brain development, school continuity, family systems, and the unique social pressures of adolescence. We offer age-appropriate programming, licensed clinicians trained in adolescent development, and family involvement as a core component of care. Teens and their families deserve treatment designed for their specific needs.
Our adolescent programs include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, academic support, and experiential activities. We do not simply replicate adult programming for younger clients; we adapt modalities and pacing to developmental stage. Peer groups are same-age, and our clinicians understand the dynamics of adolescent substance use—including social media, peer pressure, and identity formation.
School continuity is a priority. We coordinate with schools to support academic progress during treatment, whether through on-campus tutoring, virtual school participation, or transition planning for return to school. We understand that falling behind academically can add stress and undermine motivation. Our education liaisons work with school counselors and teachers to minimize disruption.
Family involvement is essential. Parents or guardians participate in family therapy, family education, and discharge planning. We help families understand adolescent addiction, set appropriate boundaries, and create a home environment that supports recovery. Research shows that family engagement significantly improves outcomes for teens in treatment.
Adolescent treatment is available at select RVK campuses. Our admissions team can assess your teen's needs and recommend the appropriate level of care—whether detox, residential, PHP, or IOP. Adolescent treatment at RVK is designed for teens ages 13 to 17 who are experiencing substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, or behavioral patterns that place them at risk for escalating use. Our program serves adolescents who have experimented with alcohol, cannabis, prescription drugs, or other substances and whose use has begun to impair academic performance, family relationships, social functioning, or physical health. We also treat teens who have been identified through school-based screening, juvenile justice referrals, or concerned family members. Our admissions team conducts a thorough assessment—including input from parents, school personnel, and referring providers—to determine whether our adolescent program is the appropriate fit.
A typical day in our adolescent program balances clinical programming with age-appropriate structure and engagement. Mornings begin with a wellness check, breakfast, and a community meeting. Academic time follows, with on-site tutoring or virtual school participation coordinated with the teen's home school. Clinical programming in the late morning and afternoon includes individual therapy, peer process groups, psychoeducation tailored to adolescent development, and experiential activities such as art therapy, music therapy, outdoor recreation, or team-building exercises. Family therapy sessions are scheduled weekly. Evenings feature peer support activities, journaling, and wind-down routines that promote healthy sleep habits—a critical but often disrupted component of adolescent wellbeing.
Our adolescent clinical model integrates developmental psychology with evidence-based addiction treatment modalities. We use motivational interviewing to engage teens who may be ambivalent about treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy to address distorted thinking patterns, and dialectical behavior therapy skills training to build emotion regulation and distress tolerance. For teens with trauma histories, we offer trauma-focused CBT adapted for adolescents. Our psychiatric team evaluates every adolescent for co-occurring conditions—depression, anxiety, ADHD, conduct disorder, and eating disorders are common—and provides medication management when clinically indicated. Treatment plans are reviewed weekly and adjusted based on the teen's engagement, progress, and evolving needs.
Parental and family involvement is not optional in our adolescent program—it is a clinical requirement. Research demonstrates that family engagement is the single strongest predictor of positive treatment outcomes for adolescents. Parents participate in weekly family therapy sessions, attend family education groups where they learn about adolescent brain development, substance use risk factors, and effective communication strategies, and collaborate with the treatment team on discharge planning. We also address family system dynamics that may contribute to the teen's substance use, including parental substance use, marital conflict, inconsistent boundaries, and communication breakdowns. Our goal is to strengthen the family system so that it supports the teen's recovery long after treatment ends.
Insurance coverage for adolescent treatment follows the same principles as adult care—most major carriers, Medicare, Medicaid, and state children's health insurance programs cover substance use disorder treatment when medically necessary. Our admissions team verifies benefits, assists with pre-authorization, and explains coverage and any out-of-pocket costs to parents before admission. We understand that the decision to place a teen in treatment is emotionally and logistically complex, and our team guides families through every step of the process with sensitivity, transparency, and clinical expertise. Early intervention during adolescence can alter the trajectory of a young person's relationship with substances for decades to come.
