How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care
Addiction affects entire families. At RVK Treatment, family therapy is not an add-on—it is integrated into our treatment model across every level of care. Our family therapy program helps repair trust, improve communication, set healthy boundaries, and align family members around recovery goals. Research consistently shows that family involvement improves treatment retention and long-term outcomes.
Family therapy sessions typically include the client and one or more family members, facilitated by a licensed family therapist. Sessions focus on communication patterns, boundary setting, and understanding addiction as a family disease. We do not blame or shame; we work to create a family system that supports recovery rather than enabling use. Many families report that family therapy during treatment is the most meaningful clinical experience of the entire process.
We also offer family education programs that help loved ones understand addiction, recognize enabling behaviors, and learn how to support recovery without sacrificing their own wellbeing. Caregivers often neglect their own mental health while supporting someone in addiction; we encourage family members to seek their own support—Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, or individual therapy—alongside their loved one's treatment.
Family involvement varies by level of care and clinical phase. During early detox or inpatient stabilization, contact may be limited to protect the client's focus. As treatment progresses, we increase family contact through phone calls, video visits, and in-person family therapy. Our family services team coordinates with the clinical team to ensure timing supports—rather than disrupts—the therapeutic process.
If you have a loved one in treatment or considering treatment, we encourage you to participate in family programming when offered. Your involvement can make a significant difference in their recovery. Call our admissions line to learn more about our family therapy program and how you can be part of the process.
Family therapy at RVK Treatment benefits a wide spectrum of family configurations—spouses and partners, parents and adult children, siblings, grandparents raising grandchildren, and chosen family members who play significant roles in the client's life. We do not define family narrowly; we work with the people who matter most to the client's recovery system. Families affected by addiction often experience broken trust, financial strain, emotional exhaustion, and role confusion. Our therapists help family members understand their own patterns—codependency, over-functioning, withdrawal, or anger—and develop healthier responses that support recovery without sacrificing personal boundaries or mental health.
Our family therapy sessions utilize evidence-based models including the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach, structural family therapy, and systemic family therapy. CRAFT is particularly effective for families whose loved one is ambivalent about treatment, as it teaches family members strategies to encourage engagement without confrontation or ultimatums. Structural family therapy examines and restructures the relational patterns within the family that may inadvertently maintain addictive behaviors. Our therapists are trained to navigate the complex dynamics that addiction creates and to facilitate conversations that may have felt impossible before treatment began.
A typical family therapy session lasts 60 to 90 minutes and may include the client, one or more family members, and the family therapist. Sessions are goal-oriented—each meeting targets specific communication challenges, boundary issues, or trust-building objectives identified in the treatment plan. Between sessions, families receive homework assignments such as practicing active listening, identifying their own emotional triggers, or rehearsing difficult conversations. Family weekends on campus provide an extended opportunity for deeper work, including multi-family group sessions where families learn from one another's experiences and build a support network of peers who understand the unique challenges of loving someone in recovery.
The impact of family involvement on treatment outcomes is well documented. Studies show that clients whose families participate in therapy during treatment have higher rates of treatment completion, lower relapse rates at six and twelve months, and stronger social support networks post-discharge. Family members who engage in their own therapeutic work—whether through our program, Al-Anon, or individual counseling—report reduced stress, improved mental health, and healthier relationship dynamics. At RVK Treatment, we view family therapy not as an optional supplement but as an integral component of comprehensive addiction care that strengthens the entire recovery ecosystem.
Insurance plans generally cover family therapy as part of substance use disorder treatment when it is included in the client's treatment plan. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private carriers recognize the clinical value of family involvement. Our admissions team verifies family therapy coverage during the benefits check and explains any requirements or limitations. For families who are geographically distant, we offer telehealth family sessions to ensure that physical distance does not prevent participation. We believe that healing happens in relationship, and we are committed to making family therapy accessible to every client and family in our care.
