Outpatient Treatment at RVK Treatment

How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care

Outpatient treatment at RVK Treatment provides ongoing clinical support for clients who have completed higher levels of care or who need periodic accountability without intensive programming. Sessions typically occur 1 to 2 times per week and focus on relapse prevention, life skills, medication management when applicable, and long-term recovery planning. Outpatient care extends the continuum—it is not an ending but a sustained connection to support.

Outpatient serves multiple purposes. For clients stepping down from IOP, it provides a gradual reduction in structure while maintaining clinical accountability. For those in long-term recovery, it offers a touchpoint for check-ins, medication adjustments, and crisis support when needed. For some, outpatient is the entry point when addiction severity does not warrant higher levels of care. Our clinicians assess each situation individually.

Individual therapy is the core of outpatient care at RVK. Clients meet with a licensed therapist for 50-minute sessions, addressing relapse risk, co-occurring mental health, relationships, and life goals. Group options may be available depending on campus and schedule. We also connect clients with community resources—12-step meetings, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, sober housing—to build a support network beyond formal treatment.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can be continued or initiated in outpatient care. Clients on buprenorphine, naltrexone, or other medications receive ongoing prescription management and counseling. MAT is most effective when combined with behavioral therapy, and our outpatient team integrates both. We do not view medication as a substitute for recovery work; it is a tool that supports it.

Outpatient care can continue for months or years. There is no arbitrary end date—length is determined by client need and preference. Many of our alumni maintain periodic contact with our care coordination team long after formal discharge. Recovery is a lifelong journey, and we are committed to walking it with our clients. Call our admissions line to learn more about outpatient options and whether this level of care fits your situation.

Outpatient treatment is well-suited for individuals who have completed a higher level of care and are transitioning back to independent living, people with mild to moderate substance use disorders who have stable housing and supportive relationships, and clients in long-term recovery who benefit from periodic clinical check-ins. It also serves as an entry point for those who recognize problematic patterns but whose clinical presentation does not require the intensity of IOP or residential care. Our admissions team evaluates each person's needs through a comprehensive assessment, ensuring that outpatient is the appropriate match rather than a default or a compromise.

A standard outpatient session at RVK Treatment involves a 50-minute individual therapy appointment with a licensed clinician. Sessions are structured around the client's treatment goals—which may include relapse prevention skill maintenance, processing interpersonal challenges, addressing co-occurring anxiety or depression, or navigating life transitions such as returning to work, rebuilding family relationships, or pursuing education. When group therapy is available, clients participate in structured peer support sessions that reinforce accountability, normalize the recovery experience, and provide practice for healthy communication. Psychiatric appointments for medication management are scheduled at intervals appropriate to each client's medication regimen and symptom stability.

Our outpatient clinical approach emphasizes continuity and personalization. Therapists maintain detailed treatment plans that evolve with the client over months and years of engagement. We draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, and strengths-based approaches tailored to each individual. For clients on medication-assisted treatment, outpatient provides the behavioral therapy component that research shows is essential for MAT effectiveness. Our clinicians coordinate with external providers including primary care physicians, psychiatrists, probation officers, and family therapists to ensure that all aspects of a client's recovery are aligned and mutually reinforcing.

The long-term value of outpatient care is supported by extensive research demonstrating that sustained therapeutic engagement reduces relapse rates, improves mental health outcomes, and supports stable employment and housing. At RVK Treatment, outpatient serves as the final formal rung in our continuum of care, but we view it less as an endpoint and more as an ongoing partnership. Many of our longest-tenured outpatient clients credit regular sessions with their therapist as a cornerstone of their recovery. Insurance plans—including Medicare, Medicaid, and most private carriers—cover outpatient substance use disorder treatment, and our admissions team verifies benefits and explains coverage before the first appointment.
