Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) offer the clinical intensity of inpatient treatment without overnight residence. At RVK Treatment, our PHP clients attend programming 5 to 6 days per week for 6 or more hours per day, then return home or to sober living each evening. PHP serves as a critical step-down from inpatient or residential care, bridging the gap between immersive treatment and the independence of outpatient life.

PHP is ideal for clients who have completed detox and initial stabilization but still need intensive daily structure. It is also appropriate for those who have stable housing and support but require more than standard outpatient can provide. Our PHP includes daily group therapy, process groups, individual therapy sessions, medication management, and experiential programming. Clients work on relapse prevention, coping skills, trauma processing, and life planning while gradually re-engaging with work, school, or family responsibilities.

The typical PHP stay at RVK ranges from 2 to 6 weeks. Length is determined by clinical progress, not arbitrary timelines. Our treatment teams assess readiness for step-down to intensive outpatient (IOP) based on engagement, symptom stability, and aftercare planning. Some clients transition to IOP within 2 weeks; others benefit from a longer PHP stay. We individualize every care plan.

PHP is available at multiple RVK campuses, and we offer both in-person and telehealth options where clinically appropriate. Telehealth PHP allows clients who cannot travel to a campus to receive intensive care from home—particularly valuable for parents, caregivers, or those in rural areas. Our clinical team evaluates each client to determine whether in-person or telehealth PHP is the better fit.

Insurance typically covers PHP when medically necessary. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private plans include PHP benefits for substance use disorder treatment. Partial hospitalization is especially beneficial for individuals who have completed inpatient or residential care and need continued intensive support as they reintegrate into daily life. It is also appropriate for those experiencing a psychiatric or substance use crisis who have adequate support at home, clients stepping down from a higher level of care who are not yet ready for the reduced structure of IOP, and individuals whose work or family obligations make full-time residential treatment impractical. A typical PHP day at RVK Treatment begins with arrival and a brief check-in with clinical staff, including a mood and safety screening. The morning block features process groups where clients explore interpersonal dynamics, share experiences, and practice new communication skills. A psychoeducation session follows, covering topics such as the neuroscience of addiction, relapse warning signs, or healthy relationship patterns. After a supervised lunch break, afternoon programming includes individual therapy sessions, skills-based workshops in areas like distress tolerance and emotion regulation, and experiential activities such as mindfulness practice or creative expression. The day concludes with a closing group where clients reflect on progress and set goals for the evening and the following day.

Our PHP clinical model is rooted in ASAM-aligned treatment planning and draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and trauma-informed care principles. Each client receives a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment upon enrollment, and the treatment team develops an individualized care plan that addresses substance use, co-occurring mental health conditions, family dynamics, and life skills deficits. Psychiatrists provide medication management for clients who need it, and the treatment team meets regularly to review progress, adjust goals, and plan for step-down. We use validated outcome measures to track symptom improvement and functional gains throughout the PHP stay, ensuring that clinical decisions remain evidence-based and responsive to each client's trajectory.

Research supports PHP as a highly effective level of care for substance use disorders, with outcomes comparable to residential treatment for many client profiles.
