Trauma Treatment at RVK Treatment

How RVK Treatment approaches this level of care

Trauma and addiction are deeply intertwined. Many people who develop substance use disorders have experienced trauma—childhood adversity, violence, loss, or other overwhelming events. At RVK Treatment, our trauma-informed approach recognizes that addiction is often a coping mechanism for unresolved trauma, and that effective treatment must address both. We create safety first, then support clients in processing trauma at their own pace.

Trauma-informed care means we prioritize safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. We do not force clients into trauma processing before they are ready. We avoid practices that could retraumatize—such as confrontational interventions or punitive consequences. We explain the rationale behind interventions and give clients voice in their care. Our staff are trained in trauma-informed principles and apply them in every interaction.

When clients are ready for trauma processing, we offer evidence-based modalities including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. These approaches help clients process traumatic memories in a safe, structured way, reducing the emotional charge that often drives substance use. Not every client needs or wants trauma processing during addiction treatment; we individualize every plan.

Somatic approaches—body-based interventions that address trauma stored in the nervous system—are also integrated into our programming. Yoga, mindfulness, and breathwork can support nervous system regulation and reduce hyperarousal. Our wellness team works alongside the clinical team to offer these adjuncts when appropriate.

Trauma treatment is available across our continuum. If you or a loved one has experienced trauma and struggles with addiction, we encourage you to seek a program that addresses both. Call our admissions line to learn more about our trauma-informed approach and whether RVK Treatment might be a fit.

Trauma treatment at RVK benefits individuals who have experienced a broad range of adverse events—childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, sexual assault, combat exposure, serious accidents, natural disasters, community violence, and the cumulative trauma of systemic oppression or chronic marginalization. Many clients entering addiction treatment carry complex trauma, meaning they experienced multiple or prolonged traumatic events, often beginning in childhood. These individuals may present with difficulties in emotion regulation, self-concept, relational patterns, and somatic symptoms that compound substance use. Our trauma-specialized clinicians are trained to recognize these presentations and to create treatment plans that honor the complexity of each person's history.

A typical week in our trauma treatment track includes two to three individual trauma therapy sessions, daily trauma-informed process groups, somatic experiencing or body-based regulation sessions, and experiential activities designed to rebuild a sense of safety and agency. EMDR sessions follow a structured eight-phase protocol that allows clients to reprocess traumatic memories while the therapist provides bilateral stimulation to facilitate adaptive integration. Trauma-focused CBT sessions teach clients to identify and restructure maladaptive beliefs formed in response to traumatic experiences—beliefs such as 'I am fundamentally broken' or 'The world is entirely unsafe.' Both modalities are supported by robust research demonstrating significant reductions in PTSD symptom severity and associated substance use.

Our trauma clinical model recognizes that trauma lives in the body as well as the mind. Chronic hyperarousal, dissociation, somatic pain, and sleep disturbance are common among trauma survivors and can be powerful relapse triggers if unaddressed. We integrate body-based approaches including yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, guided breathwork, and mindfulness meditation into our trauma programming. These practices help clients develop interoceptive awareness—the ability to notice and interpret internal body signals—which supports emotion regulation and reduces the reflexive turn to substances when distress arises. Our wellness team collaborates closely with the clinical team to ensure that somatic interventions complement and reinforce the therapeutic work.

Family members of trauma survivors often struggle to understand the connection between past experiences and present substance use. Our family education program includes specific modules on trauma and addiction, teaching loved ones about triggers, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional numbing. We help families develop responses that promote safety rather than inadvertently retraumatizing the client. Family therapy sessions within the trauma track focus on rebuilding trust, establishing communication norms, and creating a home environment that supports continued healing after discharge.

Research consistently demonstrates that trauma-informed addiction treatment produces superior outcomes compared to standard addiction treatment alone. Clients who receive integrated trauma and addiction care show greater reductions in PTSD symptoms, lower relapse rates, and higher levels of functional recovery at follow-up. At RVK Treatment, we track trauma symptom scores using the PCL-5 and other validated instruments throughout treatment and at post-discharge intervals. Our commitment to evidence-based trauma care means that every clinical decision is informed by the latest research, and our protocols are updated regularly to reflect advances in the field. Healing from trauma is possible, and we are dedicated to providing the expertise and compassion that make it achievable.
